The Bali Edit

Mariya's personal guide to the island

This is my personal, ever-growing guide to Bali.

This is a truly special island — its energy, its nature, and its culture rooted in devotion, ritual, and ceremony draw people back again and again.

Bali's popularity has grown, and rightly so. First-time visitors tend to have one of two experiences here: the most beautiful, or a rather unpleasant one. What separates the two is almost always where you choose to stay.

With that popularity comes crowded, touristy pockets that have lost touch with the island's true spirit.

My personal recommendation is to avoid Kuta and Seminyak — both are touristy, dirty, and do not reflect what makes Bali special. Take it or leave it.

I've compiled this guide of my personal favorite spots for you, the ones I return to and truly enjoy, each with my own notes.

Bear in mind that this guide doesn't claim to have all the great spots in Bali — just the ones I've personally discovered, enjoy, and want to recommend. That, of course, reflects my own character, which might not necessarily fully align with yours.

In this guide you'll mostly find plenty of spa, yoga, and sanctuary spaces. Canggu does have really amazing nightlife, beautiful bars and restaurants — that's just not something I've personally researched well enough, so I invite you to do that yourself if that's of interest.

I'm continuously updating it. Consider it a starting point.

Uluwatu

Cliffs, surf, and slow days by the sea

One of my favorite areas in Bali. I recommend staying here if you love swimming, surfing, and a relaxed ocean lifestyle with high-quality food.

Uluwatu is a chilled-out surfer lifestyle area, and one of the few places in Bali with very little traffic. It has beautiful sandy beaches, including the one I swim at: clean, private, with a good café. Come for the epic sunsets, some yoga, and plenty of surf to watch.

I've included only a few places to stay in this guide, the ones I've tested and feel confident about. For anything else, I recommend searching Airbnb for amazing villas that match your taste.

One thing to know: one of the main beaches is being redeveloped, so there is construction in some areas right now. Before you book, read the reviews and ask your accommodation about construction nearby.

Canggu

Buzzing, social, and always moving

A buzzing area full of digital nomads and expats, with a great international crowd. It's ideal for meeting people, with amazing bars and great restaurants.

Canggu also has some of the best fitness and wellbeing centers in Bali. Try a workout class you haven't tried before. They take it seriously here, from biohacking to recovery centers.

The sunsets are gorgeous, and the surf is beautiful and quite advanced in some spots. The ocean is not ideal for swimming.

I'm not much of a party person, so I've included only a few restaurants. For nightlife, I recommend doing your own research. The vibes are great.

Ubud

Rice paddies, ceremony, and spiritual well-being

Ubud is like an ongoing well-being and spiritual festival. Incredible yoga centers, ceremonies, kirtan, healing, and spas are all here.

It has beautiful rice paddies and a tropical climate that's a little less hot than the beach areas. There is no beach here.

Ubud is also an arts and crafts center, with amazing shops and markets.

This is where I prefer to stay most of the time. I base myself here, and sometimes go to Uluwatu for beach life.

Ubud has a lot of traffic. Be ready to ride a bike, or book a bike taxi. In a car, you can sit in traffic for hours. It's the downside of this area, but the ceremony, ritual, somatic work, and yoga here are so worth it. Manage your time, arrive early, and embrace the bike lifestyle.

Nights are quiet. Almost everything closes by 10 or 11pm.

For a more beautiful setting, look at places to stay in the rice paddies.
